Cooking with Karen - Yule Log part 1
Part 1 shows you how to make the main cake base
The Yule Log, or the Buche de Noel, is traditionally a French recipe but has been adapted in several Francophone countries. Karen Lam, the International Club's vice president shares with us her method for making this delicious cake.
Ingredients:
-7 eggs (separate the whites and yolk)
-1 tsp cream of tartar
-2/3 cup milk
-1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
-2/3 cup sugar
-A pinch of salt
-1 cup bleached cake flour
-1 tbs cocoa powder
Instructions:
1) Separate out egg whites from egg yolks
2) Add cream of tartar to egg whites, and mix to soft peak
3) Add milk and vanilla extract to egg yolks, stir
4) Sift sugar, salt, cake flour, and cocoa to egg yolks, stir as you go to keep cake airy
5) Add egg white mixture to egg yolk mixture, stir from the bottom up to keep the same consistency
6) Cover rectangular baking sheet with a piece of parchment/wax paper, and pour your cake mixture onto it--make sure it is distributed evenly and along all edges
7) Bake at 375 °F for 30 minutes
8) Remember to let the cake cool completely before you add on the cream from part 2!
Yule Log, Part 1

Yule log, or buche de Noel, is a European Christmas dessert. The taste is hard to describe, but here's what I can at least say. The blending of flavors between the cake, filling, and frosting creates something that is more than the sum of the parts.
