HOMEMADE FRENCH ONION DIP RECIPE INGREDIENTS
3 medium onions, sliced
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp butter
1 large clove of garlic, minced
2 tbsp brown sugar
8 oz cream cheese, softened
8 oz sour cream
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Potato chips and/or assorted vegetables for dipping
Peel and slice three medium onions. In a cast iron skillet or saute pan, heat one tablespoon of olive oil and one tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the onions and stir until they are well coated. Spread the onions into a single layer in the pan. Cook the onions until they are carmelized, about 15 minutes, stirring so they don’t burn.
Lower the heat to medium low and add 1 large clove of minced garlic, stirring to saute about 1 minute. Add two tablespoons of brown sugar. Stir into the onion mixture and cook for 2 minutes.
Mix together softened cream cheese, sour cream, onion powder and worcestershire sauce. Chop the cooled carmelized onions into very fine pieces. Reserve a small amount of chopped onions for topping the finished dip, if desired. Fold the onions into the cream cheese mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Top with chopped parsley and reserved onions.

Grilled Onion Cheese Dip
Cheese, onions, and bacon… yes! bacon! Everyone needs a few go to cheese dip recipes and this is one of them. This has a very rich addicting cheese flavor that you won’t want to stop eating. And you can cook this dip on the grill if your oven is full with a holiday ham or turkey. You can also just cook this dip in the oven but that’s not as fun as standing outside by the grill with a beer.
Ingredients
8 oz shredded gruyere cheese
8 oz shredded gouda cheese
1 8oz package of cream cheese
1 1/2 cups sour cream
1/2 pound of bacon
2 large vidalia onions
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1 French baguette
1 stick of butter
1 tablespoon herbes des provence
First, slice 1/2 pound of bacon into bits, then cook the bacon on medium heat for 10 minutes or until done. Remove the bacon from the skillet and place it on paper towels to absorb the grease. Keep the grease in the pan.
While the bacon is cooking, thinly slice 2 vidalia onions. After removing the bacon, add the onions to the pan and cook it in the hot bacon grease for 10 minutes or until browned. Remove the onions and place them on paper towels to absorb the grease.
While cooking the onions, hand shred the gruyere and gouda cheese. Add softened cream cheese and sour cream to a mixing bowl. Add Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and dried thyme. Mix thoroughly with an electric mixer or a large spoon. While mixing, add the shredded cheese, bacon, and the onions. Transfer the mixture to a 13 inch cast iron skillet. If you want to prepare this dip a day before cooking, you can cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap and store overnight in the refrigerator.
Preheat your grill (or oven) to low (350F) and when it reaches temp, add the skillet directly over the fire. Cook for 20 – 30 minutes, or until brown on the surface.
Slice the French baguette in 1/2 inch thick slices. Place the slices on cooling racks to make things easier for moving the bread in and out of the grill. Melt the butter and brush it on both sides of the bread. Season both sides of the bread with herbes des provence. Place the cooling racks with bread in the grill and cook for 10 minutes.
Remove the cheese dip and bread from the grill, then allow the dip to cool for 10 minutes before serving.

What you need for this Onion Dip Recipe
4 medium sized ONIONS
1 Tbsp BUTTER
1 Tbsp OIL
1 tsp SALT
2 tsp GARLIC POWDER
2-3 Tbsp WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE or ¼ cup WINE
8oz softened CREAM CHEESE
SOUR CREAM as desired
fresh PARSLEY or GREEN ONION TOPS for garnish
How to make a Caramelized Onion Dip Recipe
Slice the onions. It’s best to use sweet or yellow onions.
Heat oil and butter on medium high heat in a skillet.
Add the onions and saute about 5-10 minutes, stirring routinely.
Reduce heat to medium and add salt and garlic powder and continue to stir as needed. As the onions cook down, add a little wine or Worcestershire sauce to keep the onions juicy, or just a sprinkling of water.
Continue cooking until the onions are rich and caramel colored. Don’t be in a hurry, it might take 30 minutes to achieve perfectly caramelized onions, and the wait is worth it.
In a bowl, mix the softened cream cheese and a spoonful of sour cream.
Chop up the caramelized onions well and stir into the mix. Stir until the ingredients are well incorporated. You can adjust the amount of sour cream to make the dip as creamy as you like. The dip will firm up as the onions cool.
For color, stir in a little fresh parsley or green onion tops, but only use the fresh green onion if eating the same day.
This dip is tasty, but like most dips it’ll be even tastier if you can make it a day ahead of time to allow the flavors to meld.
Betty's Cream Cheese Onion Dip, Recipe by Jennifer Smith
Betty demonstrates how to make Cream Cheese Onion Dip. This recipe was sent in by Jennifer Smith. It is a very simple and interesting way to make a flavorful Onion Dip for chips.
Cream Cheese Onion Dip
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
¼ to ½ cup milk
salt and pepper, to taste
¼ to ½ cup onion, very finely chopped
Place softened cream cheese in a large mixing bowl. Slowly add ¼ to ½ cup milk and mix with a hand mixer, adding only about 1/8 cup milk at a time. The mixture will come together after some mixing. Just continue to mix, until you get the consistency you like. It can be whipped to stiff peaks, or less. Add salt and pepper, to taste. Also add the finely chopped onion. Place in a serving dish, surrounded by potato chips, pretzels, corn chips, or crackers. Chill this dip if you plan to spread it on crackers. It will be too thin to spread, unless you let it solidify in the refrigerator. The dip has a great taste and texture. Enjoy! Thanks, Jennifer for a terrific recipe. –Betty :)
