Longleaf Pines of Southeast Texas
In Jasper County, Texas we encounter one of the most diverse habitats in the South, consisting of a sandy forest of Longleaf Pine, Pinus patula adjacent to a soggy bottomland with 3 different kinds of carnivorous plants, including pitcher plants (#Sarracenia alata) on it and a #mycoheterotrophic plant (#Apteria aphylla) that's barely noticeable in the shadowy understory in which it grows.
Later, we end up a few miles away on a dry, rocky sandstone glade to see a succulent member of the bitterroot family, #Montiaceae.

Vietnamese Texans & Their Home Gardens [2022-05-03]
Today, Dr. Roy Vũ discusses the importance of home gardens to Vietnamese Texans.
With the collapse of the South Vietnamese government and the Communist takeover of South Vietnam, tens of thousands of Vietnamese fled from their home country and sought refuge and asylum elsewhere. They left behind more than their home country; they were also separated from their loved ones, personal prized possessions, and livelihoods. For Vietnamese refugees and political asylees, their lives were violently disrupted, as they were forced to migrate and resettle in another country. To cope with their traumas of war, exile, resettlement, and marginalization in the United States, Vietnamese refugees and political asylees adjust to become new Americans. One healthy response to cope with their traumas and help them feel rooted in America is to cultivate home gardens.
In this presentation, Dr. Vu covers three main topics pertaining to Vietnamese Americans and their home gardens: food sovereignty, homeland duality, and culinary citizenship.
