Laphroaig Live 2011 - Sydney
Alexander Johnston and his brother, Donald Johnston, who founded Laphroaig back in 1815 were responsible for developing the unique flavour of Laphroaig that is adored by whisky fans throughout the World. In 1836, Alexander sold his share of the distillery to Donald for an unthinkable sum of £350 and he and his family set sail for Australia where they began a new life, which is how we ended up in Sydney for Laphroaig Live 2011...
We had the honour of being reunited with Alexander's great-great granddaughter, Lin Johnston, along with many of her family, also Johnston descendants. Lin joined us on the panel along with John Campbell, Robert Hicks and author, Rebecca Varidel for an unforgettable tasting experience.
To celebrate the occasion, a very rare expression was opened live on the show - a historic Laphroaig 10 year old, distilled back in the 1950s in one of the last batches ever to be bottled by Lin Johnston's ancestors. Very few of these bottles exist so it was a truly momentous experience.
To complement the whiskies, as well as pay homage to our Australian hosts, we enjoyed a barbecue during the show with various dishes cooked in a Laphroaig marinade. Friends of Laphroaig voted for their favourite dishes, as suggested by the Australian FOLs, and the winning recipes were used on the night.
Several Friends of Laphroaig joined us for the show which was filmed against a stunning harbour-side backdrop with views of the iconic Opera House.
