Southern Style Slaw Dog ~ Carolina Dog ~ Hot Dogs of Summer ~ Noreen's Kitchen
Today, in honor of Memorial Day and the official kick off of the summer season, we are sharing another regional hot dog favorite! This time around it is the southern style slaw dog also known as a Carolina dog. An all beef hot dog topped with mustard, hot dog chili, diced onions and sweet southern coleslaw. A combo that you may think is odd, but is surprisingly delicious and satisfying!
Hot dogs are as diverse throughout the regions of America as the people who eat them. The lowly hot dog, sausage, red hot, snapper, half smoke, frankfurter, wiener or whatever you like to call them. My dad used to jokingly call them tube steaks because at one time they were the only meat he could afford to eat. These lovely links are never far from a summer barbecue and everyone has their own way of making and enjoying them.
The origins of the southern slaw dog are murky at best. According to the internet the slaw dog originated somewhere in northern West Virginia: “Legend has it that slaw was first served as a hot dog topping at The Stopette Drive In on Route 21 near Charleston, West Virginia. This was during the Great Depression when weenies and cabbage were two of the most plentiful and affordable food items. The Stopette sold hot dogs with slaw for only a few years before every eatery in the area copied them. Within a few years restaurants all over southern and central West Virginia were including slaw as a standard ingredient. As many West Virginians left the state looking for work in the southern United States they took their taste for slaw on hot dogs with them. Slaw Dogs are now found in many areas of the south where West Virginia natives settled.”
So there is a little history for you. I always love to learn where different recipes originated and how different regional cuisine evolves over time as a people come and go. This slaw dog is not exception. I know it's just a hot dog, but really it is so much more. It is a definition of a group of people and how they enjoy food that may be different from how you enjoy it. This is a way to open up our mind and our palate and help us understand each other better. Food as the great equalizer. We all have to eat and we can learn a lot from each other in that realm.
This slaw dog is delicious, simple and quick. I pan fried my Kosher hot dogs in a bit of butter till the were evenly browned and a little crispy on the outside. You can cook boil, steam or grill yours if you prefer. I also used some split top hot dog buns that we found made by Pepperidge Farm. I love a split top bun so much better than a side split bun. It makes it so much easier to nestle the dog inside and top with your favorites. These also do not break apart when you open them! That is the best part.
You can always choose to make your own hot dog chili. I took some help from the grocery store today and picked up a packet of Nathan's brand hot dog sauce. You just open, heat in the microwave for one minute and wait two more then squeeze the sauce on the dogs. This little bag will most likely top six dogs. I made a half batch of my KFC copycat coleslaw for these dogs.
These dogs are delicious and the perfect answer to a quick weeknight dinner. Pair these with a bag of frozen fries, baked to crispy perfection or even just a bag of chips. A side salad or just more coleslaw on the side will do. Add some fruit like melon or pineapple and dinner is done and quick. Don't think you have to make your own slaw! Stop by the grocery store deli and pick up a container from them. I won't tell! Add this to your menu plan for a quick, delicious, budget friendly option for busy nights or when it is just too hot to cook!

This is almost exactly like the sauce you find on NY Hot Dog Carts! Use it on hot dogs, burgers, steaks, ice cream, anything!
Hot Dog Onion Sauce (NY pushcart style)
- 2 tablespoons neutral oil like canola
- 4 large onions (sweet work best)
- 5 cloves garlic, pressed or minced fine
- ¼ cup Tomato Paste
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon ground mustard
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ cup white vinegar
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 4 cups water
- Slurry: 2 tablespoons water & 1 tablespoon cornstarch
1. Cut onions in half, and slice into ¼ inch slices
2. In 5qt pot, add oil and heat on medium
3. Add onions and cook for a few minutes until they begin to soften and release water
4. Add garlic and cook for about one minute
5. Add tomato paste and cook for another minute or two
6. Add all the spices and stir
7. Add vinegar and brown sugar, stir
8. Add water, stir well, and bring to a simmer
9. Simmer for 30-45 minutes until liquid begins to thicken
10. Add cornstarch slurry and stir well. Turn heat off and allow to cool slightly
11. Serve and enjoy!
