Ultimate Grilled Cheese Hot Dog for Memorial Day
Today we’re making the Ultimate Grilled Cheese Hot Dog just in time for your Memorial Day Cookout. This is no ordinary grilled cheese. We’ve got two different cheese blends, shredded dill pickles, ground stone mustard and bacon. Let’s get started on the best grilled cheese hot dog that you’ll ever eat!
Ingredients (for 1 hot grilled cheese hot dog)
• 1 Bun
• 1 Hot Dog
• 1 small Kosher Dill Gherkin Pickle
• ¼ cup Mexican cheese blend
• ¼ cup white cheese blend
• 1 piece bacon, fried
• ¼ cup butter (note, this amount of butter will do at least 2 hot dog buns)
• ¼ teaspoon garlic powder (note, this amount of garlic powder will do at least 2 hot dog buns)
• 1-2 tablespoons of stone ground mustard
• ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
Instructions
1. Set the butter out on your counter at room temperature until it softens.
2. Shred the pickle.
3. Chop the bacon.
4. Mix the garlic powder with the butter to make a paste.
5. Open the hot dog bun and place the inside facing down on the counter. Using a spatula, flatten the hot dog bun.
6. Using a knife, butterfly the hot dog down the center, but do not cut all the way through the hot dog.
7. Set up the grill for 2-zone heating. On the side with high heat, place the hot dog on the grill and quickly cook both sides. Approximate cook time is 1.5 minutes per side.
8. Place the hot dog bun on the indirect side of the grill with the inside down on the grill grates. Apply the butter mixture to the top side of the hot dog bun.
9. Turn the bun over and put the Mexican cheese blend on both halves of the hot dog bun.
10. Place the hot dog on one half of the bun, then apply the stone ground mustard.
11. Equally sprinkle the white cheese blend over the hot dog and remaining hot dog bun half.
12. Sprinkle the dill pickle over the hot dog. Then, sprinkle the chopped bacon over the hot dog.
13. Either turn the indirect heat up to low or reduce the high heat to low, then toast the bottom side of the bun.
14. When the cheese melts, sprinkle the red pepper flakes over the cheese.
15. Carefully fold the open bun side on the hot dog (just like you were eating a hot dog on a bun) and using the spatula, press down on the bun and flatten on the hot dog.
