Italian Pine Nuts Product Spotlight Video
Katie from MarxFoods.com discusses organic, wild-harvested Italian pine nuts & how they differ from Chinese pine nuts.
Transcript:
Hey everybody, it's Katie from Marx Foods. I'm going to talk to you today about our 100% Italian pine nuts, which are wild gathered in Tuscany and are certified organic.
I begin with 100% Italian because a lot of pine nuts you see for sale in the supermarket and in stores are actually the cheaper Chinese pine nuts, which is a different variety altogether. We definitely think that Mediterranean-grown pine nuts are much better.
Here's how you can tell the two apart: Italian pine nuts are cylindrical in shape, kind of like a big grain of rice or a tiny torpedo, and Chinese pine nuts are triangular, reminiscent of a corn kernel.
They also differ in color and flavor as well. Italian pine nuts have a clean, delicate flavor perfectly suited for classic Italian dishes, and they're also less fatty. Chinese pine nuts are oilier, and they have a very strong pine flavor and a slight bitterness to them.
So now we've covered the differences, let's get to the best part -- how to eat them.
Pine nuts are a starring ingredient in pesto, as you probably know, but they're great in a lot of other applications as well. You can toast them before use in a dry pan on the stove top for a couple of minutes to really bring out the flavor, and you can toss them into salads, in rice dishes and pilafs. You can put them in sauces, and even in meatballs.
If you want to go the sweet route, they're great in desserts as well. You can use them in cookies and pastries, shortbreads, ice cream and gelato. Of course you can eat them by themselves for a tasty snack as well.
