Southern Style Turnip Greens (The EASY way) Make in Stock Pot or Instant Pot!
This is definitely one of my favorite recipes. I grew up eating delicious Southern styled greens. You can use this same recipe for your favorite greens, collard or mustard greens. This time I used bacon, though you may use a ham hock or a leftover ham bone with some ham still attached (some like to use turkey necks or wings). I make mine changing ingredients here and there, today was my basic simple method.
Below is what I used in the video. I will list some other great add in ingredients below the recipe:
2- 14 oz bags of frozen turnip greens (remember you do not need to be exact on recipes like this)
1/2 LB bacon diced and fried.
1-1 1/2 diced and sautéed onions (sauté in some of the rendered bacon grease. I prefer to use sweet onions for this, Vidalia)
1 cup chicken stock
1 teaspoon salt (or to your taste)
1/2- 1 1/2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
salt and pepper to your taste
Other great ingredients:
red pepper flakes
garlic (a little goes a long way)
1 1/2-2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar (My Mama ALWAYS added this)
Add the chicken stock, onions, bacon and turnip greens to the instant pot. Place lid on, make sure the float valve is down, make sure that it is set to seal. Pressure cook for 30 minutes and allow for a natural release (it only takes 15-20 minutes). Remove lid and add in the salt and Cajun seasoning. If using Red pepper flakes or garlic, add in BEFORE cooking. Apple cider vinegar can be added before or after the pressure cook. Leftovers will last in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. You can also freeze them (WITH the pot liquor) up to 3-3 1/2 months. Honestly, mine never last that long LOL The pot liquor is delicious to drink!
To make in a stock pot one the stove:
Same ingredients, same methods. Increase chicken stock to about 6 cups (just enough to cover the greens). Add all ingredients to stock pot and bring just barely up to a boil, then turn down immediately to a low simmer and cook for at least 1 1/2-2 hours, until very tender, being sure to check on the pot and give a stir every so often. If using a lid, be sure to slightly cock it on top of pot to allow for a little steam to escape.
Add some hot sauce for an addition kick! What to eat with them? Well, they are delicious served in a bowl with a hunk of cornbread. They are great just when served with butter beans (my previous video). They are also delicious along side of fried ham slices. fried chicken, pork chops, along with a chicken fried steak! They are just delicious any way that you serve them!
ENJOY!
