Cooking with the First Ladies: Cookie Bakeoff
Take part in your own cookie bake-off with Sarah as she makes four famous first lady cookie recipes.
The cookie bake-off was conceived in 1992 from the campaign trail response Hillary Clinton gave to a reporter’s question about her desire to have her own separate career. Hillary stated, “I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas, but what I decided to do was to fulfill my profession, which I entered before my husband was in public life.” In the spirit of light-hearted fun, Barbara Bush and Hillary Clinton submitted cookie recipes to Family Circle.
Family Circle’s “First Lady’s Cookie Contest” was renamed “The Presidential Cookie Poll” in 2016, when the contest was no longer between two potential “first ladies.” A new title for the 28-year-old contest became necessary when Bill Clinton re-submitted “The Clinton Family Chocolate Chip Cookies” recipe against Melania Trump’s sugar cookie cut outs.
Do you still think a cookie bake-off is relevant today? Do you think baking cookies is gender biased?
