How To make Grandma's Oatmeal Cookies
1 1/2 c Shortening
4 lg Eggs
5 c Flour
3 c Quick cooking oats
2 c Buttermilk
1 c Granulated sugar
1 c Firmly packed brown sugar
5 ts Baking powder
1 c Chopped walnuts
1 c Raisins
4 ts Cinnamon
1/2 ts Cloves
1/2 ts Allspice
2 ts Vanilla
optional: butterscotch chips, chocolate chips, pecans for walnuts Pour 1 cup boiling water over the raisins and add 1 t baking soda. Stir well and set aside. Bring the shortening to room temperature then cream well. Add the sugar one cup at a time and cream well after each addition. Add the eggs in the same manner. Sift together the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, flour and baking powder. Add the vanilla to the creamed mixture. Drain the raisins and sprinkle one tablespoon of flour over them and shake to coat. Alternately add the flour mixture, the milk and the oatmeal. Mix well after each addition. There will a lot of dough and it should be fairly thick. With a heavy wooden spoon stir in the walnuts and the raisins and the flavored chips
you can use any amount of the flavored chips you want. Grease the cookie sheet. Drop the dough by teaspoonful on the cookie sheet. I usually get about 20 per sheet:
but then I have very, very old cookie
sheets and they are larger than my new ones. Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes. They will be golden on the
bottom and dry on the top. Remove and place on wax paper until cool. Keep in an airtight container--Tupperware is great. Makes about 10 dozen. Variation - you can save the water from soaking the raisins and cut down on the milk by the appropriate amount. this adds a very good flavor to the cookies. Enjoy Diane M. Oatmeal Cookies – Like Grandma Use to Make
Oatmeal Cookies – Like Grandma Use to Make
This is a 76 year old recipe I found in my Grandma’s cookbook, with the word “Good” written in pencil next to it.
The recipe said it would have made 60 cookies, well I didn’t use a tiny cookie cutter. Ha.
They are a little, not really dry, but can easily break. And tasted like almonds, even though nothing with almonds was put in, but had a really good taste.
I would make them again.
This video is a tribute to all Grandmas out there. I recently have gotten ahold of 50 to 100, at least, year old recipes that my Grandma used to prepare for us when we was growing up. My wife also presented me with her Grandma’s / Grandma’s box collection of handwritten recipes, a lot of them without titles. So making many of these cooking videos will be a surprise even to me.
I follow the recipes exactly with no substitutions on ingredients.
Grandmother recipes are the ones you can always relate to. You can eat something and you might say “Like Grandma Used to Make”.
The recipes I have, are from original cookbooks, newspaper cutouts, or good ol’ hand written recipes.

The Best Oatmeal Cookies? | Recipe Test 4 Ways
Today I'm testing one Oatmeal Raisin Cookie recipe FOUR ways! I'm testing the difference using vegetable shortening, butter, old fashioned oats, and quick oats makes on the final cookie result.
Dangerna’s Grandma’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookies:
- 1 3/4 cups self rising flour (or combine 1 3/4 cups AP flour with: 2 1/2 tsp Baking Powder and 1/2 tsp salt)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick unsalted butter)
- 1/2 cup butter flavored shortening (or substitute with additional 1/2 cup butter)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2/3 cup white sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 2 large eggs
- 3 cups Quaker oats (Old Fashioned or Quick is fine; I have a slight preference for Old Fashioned)
- 1 1/2 cups raisins
- 2/3 cup chopped pecans (walnuts work too!)
Directions:
- In a small bowl combine flour and cinnamon, whisk (if using AP flour, also combine the baking powder and additional salt)
- In mixer bowl add butter, shortening and mix well until smooth and slightly pale
- Add brown and white sugar mix on high for 4 minutes until light and fluffy
- Add vanilla and eggs one at a time until well mixed
- Add Quaker oats, mix to combine
- Then add the raisins and pecans, mix (dough will be thick)
- Place into refrigerator for 1 hour (or skip this step)
Preheat oven to 325 F
- Use large ice cream scoop to portion into even balls
- Press down each ball to about 3/4 a inch thick
- Bake in 325 F oven for 15-25 minutes (the bottom perimeter of each cookie should be just slightly brown; tops of cookies should still be light)
- Cool for 30 minutes
