Crispy Tofu Bites
These Crispy Tofu Bites (a.k.a. Tofu Nuggets) are ultra-crisp on the outside and juicy and flavorful in the center. Glazed in a savory-sweet sauce that’s redolent of ginger, garlic, and black pepper, these plant-based canapés are irresistibly good, even for the most hardcore carnivore.

Fried Tofu
Fried tofu is a typical Philippine appetizer or sometimes as a main dish. It is also served as a side dish to lugaw. Fried tofu is also paired with baboy (boiled pork) known as tokwa’t baboy served as pulutan (which means a snack accompanied by liquor). Tokwa’t baboy is served with garlic-flavored soy sauce or vinegar dip. Fried tofu can also be seen along the streets together with other popular Filipino street food such as fish ball, kikiam, kwek-kwek, tokneneng, calamares and so many others.
When making fried tofu it’s best to use firm tofu so when deep fried in oil its light and airy to their core. Tofu are cut into cubes or bite size pieces and fried until crisp and golden brown and accompanied by a mixture of garlic-onion soy sauce and vinegar as dipping sauce, sometimes a bit of sugar is added for sweet and sourly flavor.
As we all know tofu or bean curd are called tokwa in tagalog, is a food made by coagulating soy milk and pressing the resulting curds into soft white blocks. It is also substituted for meat because of its relatively high in protein. In the Philippines the sweet delicacy taho is made of fresh tofu with brown sugar syrup and sago. Fried tofu is also called “Atsuage” or “Namaage” in japan. The thinner variety is called “Aburaage”.
Fried Tofu
Ingredients:
Firm tofu
1 cup bread crumbs
2 eggs, beaten
Ground black pepper
Salt
Cooking oil
Procedures:
1. Dry tofu with paper towels, pressing to remove excess moisture before frying.
2. Slice tofu into cubes or bite size pieces.
3. Season breadcrumbs with salt and ground black pepper. Mix
4. Coat the tofu with egg, then cover it with breadcrumbs. Be sure to cover each sides well.
5. Heat oil in medium high heat. To check the temperature of the oil put a bamboo stick in the oil when it bubbles up, the oil is ready.
6. Then fry the tofu in batches, don’t overcrowd the pan. Change the fire into medium heat. Turning each sides until it’s crisp and golden brown.
7. Drain fried tofu in a strainer or paper towel. To absorb the oil. It’s done.
Dipping Sauce
Ingredients
¾ or 1 cup white vinegar
2 tbsp soy sauce
2-3 tbsp sugar
1 clove garlic, minced
1 small onion, chopped
Ground black pepper
Procedure:
1. In a pan put together vinegar and soy sauce. Don’t stir and let it simmer to reduce a bit of the vinegar acidity. Turn off the heat and add sugar and ground black pepper. Stir until the sugar melt from remaining heat.
2. Put sauce in a bowl and add the onions and garlic. Mix. It’s done.
Note: You can make the dipping sauce ahead of time. Since the sauce have already infused the flavor of the onions and garlic into the sauce by then.
ENJOY!
