Southern Blueberry Dumplings
My Southern blueberry dumplings recipe is the best. If you are craving pie or cobbler but don't have the patience, then this easy recipe is for you. An old fashioned yet forgotten Southern favorite, this blueberry dumplings recipe starts by boiling frozen blueberries on the stove with sugar. While the berries and sugar come to a boil, a simple batter is made with self rising flour (or all purpose flour with baking powder and salt added). My suggestion is to add a bit of vanilla extract to make the dumplings extra special. However, if you do not want to learn how to make blueberry dumplings from scratch, you can definitely use pie Bisquick, crescent rolls, canned biscuit, or pie crust: I even think that canned cinnamon rolls might work!
Once the frozen blueberries thaw and come to a boil, you add the dumplings (whichever type you choose), then boil for an additional 15 minutes. Although the dumplings do not form a hard, crispy crust like in the dry heat of the oven, something magical happens in the berry juice: the dumplings become pillowy-soft and cake-like, absorbing a bit of the delicious, purple berry juice. As you continue with this Southern blueberry dumplings recipe, the balls of dough expand and some of the blueberries break down, thicken the juice into syrup: the dessert is almost ready.
Once the recipe is done, you will see soft bits of cake-like dough floating in a deliciously sweet syrup.
Not only is this Southern blueberry dumplings recipe delicious because of the sweet berries and soft dumplings, but also because of the deep purple color. Although this is great on its down, it is also incredible with a bit of ice cream.
Although learning how to make blueberry dumplings with frozen blueberries sounds complicated, it really isn't, especially if you use frozen berries and self rising flour. This recipe would be perfect for the Fourth of July, or at any point during the year, so be sure to give it a try!????????????

Hello my Friends, welcome to my first Cooking Video in the New Year 2024!!
Today’s recipe I am making a simple, easy and comforting dessert that is perfect to serve during the winter months, Blueberry Dumplings! Tender and decedent dumplings simmered low and slow in a flavorful blueberry syrup that is bursting with flavor! Everyone will love and enjoy this on a cold day and it will warm up your soul, don’t forget the vanilla ice cream!
Blueberry Syrup
1 quart (4 cups) fresh blueberries, rinsed and discard the bad ones
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 1/2 to 2 cups water
Juice of large lemon
Dumplings
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon white sugar
Pinch salt
1/2 cup (1 stick, 8 tablespoons) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
1/4 cup cold evaporated milk
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Ellen’s Magic: You may also use strawberries or blackberries in this recipe.
For the Dumplings: In a medium or large bowl, add in the flour, baking powder, salt and 1 tablespoon sugar; whisk all together until well combined. Add in the cold butter cubes into the flour mixture and using a pastry cutter or fork, cut the butter in until it reaches coarse crumbs. Next add in the evaporated milk and vanilla extract and stir until moist and sticky. Set aside.
In a large pot or medium saucepan over high heat, add in blueberries, 1 1/2 cups sugar, water, and lemon juice; stir until well blended then cover the pot and bring to a boil. After it comes to a boil, drop in the dumplings one tablespoon at a time into the hot blueberry liquid. Reduce the heat to simmer and let it cook for 20 minutes (do not stir the dumplings but you can give the pot a shake). Turn off the heat and scoop the blueberry dumplings into a bowl, serve hot with vanilla ice cream and enjoy!

Episode 152: Southern Blueberry Dumplings ???????? (First Video of 2018)
Hello my Friends and Happy New Year!
Welcome to my first Video of the New Year, 2018! To kick off the New Year, I am making Southern Blueberry Dumplings. It is so delicious, warm, comforting and it is perfect for a Cold Day! Don’t forget the Vanilla Ice Cream!
1 quart (4 cups) fresh blueberries, washed
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 2/3 cups water
For the Dumplings
1 cup self rising flour
1 tbsp white sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into cubes
1/4 cup evaporated milk
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
Cook’s Note: You may add a little more or less water depending on much liquid you like. If you don’t have self rising flour, you may use all purpose or cake flour, add 1 tsp baking powder and 1/8 tsp salt. Also you may use Strawberries, Raspberries, or Blackberries instead of Blueberries.
For the Dumplings: In a medium bowl, add flour and sugar; stir all together. Next add butter and using a pastry cutter or fork, cut until it reaches coarse crumbs then add evaporated milk and vanilla; stir until moist and sticky.
In a large pot over high heat, add blueberries, sugar, and water. Cover and bring to a boil. After it comes to a boil, drop dumplings (1 tablespoon at a time) to the hot blueberries. Cook on medium-medium low heat for 20-30 minutes. (Do not stir but you can give it a shake) Serve hot or warm with vanilla ice cream.
