How to Make Slow-Cooked Baked Beans
David's Recipes - Slow Cooker 101 - In this video, David Venable shows you how to make slow-cooked baked beans and the timing couldn’t be better. Baked beans are the perfect summer side and slow cooker baked beans are even better. It is hot enough during these months, so take it easy, and let your slow cooker do all the work. For more of David’s Recipes:
My recipe for classic barbecue baked beans is super easy; mostly because the slow cooker does all the work. I tested this recipe many times, and I found that the best way to get the beans tender enough is cooking them for a full three hours. There should be about a cup of water left in the pot and that’s when you know it is time to add the sauce. I love a side of baked beans with a big old hearty sandwich. Try serving these with my flat iron steak sandwich or by healthy slow cooker pulled pork.
Slow-Cooked Baked Beans
Ingredients:
3/4 lb thick-cut bacon, diced
1 large onion, diced
1 lb dried pinto beans
5 cups water
3/4 cup unsulfured molasses
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup yellow mustard
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
Preparation:
Cook the bacon over medium heat in a medium-size skillet. When the bacon begins to brown, add the onions and sauté until translucent.
Place the beans into the slow cooker with the water, bacon, and onion. Cover and set the slow cooker on high for 3 hours.
Meanwhile, prepare the sauce. Combine the molasses, ketchup, mustard, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Set aside.
After 3 hours add the sauce and stir to combine. Cover and let the beans cook an additional hour.
Slow Cooker Baked Beans for a Crowd
This easy side dish feeds a crowd! You want to plan ahead. The beans should soak for 12-24 hours so the day before you want to serve them, put the beans in a pot or bowl and cover with water and 2 Tablespoons of salt. They cook for 9-10 hours so if I am serving them for lunch I often cook them overnight and then move my slow cooker from low to keep warm or serve.
