Vanilla Crescents - European Christmas in a Single Bite | Pastry Maestra
These awesome cookies are a must Christmas treat in my country, probably because of Austro-Hungarian legacy. Vanillekipferl, as they are called in Austria, originated in imperial Vienna, and you can still find them in most stores, and in elegant Viennese coffee shops. These delicate, melt-in-your-mouth bites are also popular in other European countries: Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, and – of course – here in Croatia.
Watch my video and learn how to make ultimate Christmas cookies - vanilla crescents!

Austria, a wonderful country in central Europe with an amazing capital, Vienna. The country has long and eventful history. One of the several neighbors of Austria is Hungary. Both countries have a long common history since 16th century. Both of them are also member of European Union. Nowadays both countries maintain strong political and economic connection due to the common history and the same culture. In Austria numerous tourist attractions are offered to children and adults alike, such as skiing or snowboarding in winter, road trips, sightseeing in historical cities and other possibilities to relax during the whole year. Besides, Austria is the land of fabulous castles and magnificent mountains, not to mention its gastronomy, especially desserts. Did you know that Austrians invented croissant not the French?
Vanillekipferl:
The ancestor of croissant originates form Austria and was created in the occasion of the defeat of the Ottoman army after the siege of Vienna in 1683. The original name of the dessert is kipferl which is a crescent-shaped pastry referring to the Ottoman flag. Making this dessert is very easy.

- 180g butter
- 2 egg yolks
- 50g sugar
- vanilla sugar to taste
- 70g ground almonds
Instructions (steps of baking):
1st step: mix the ingredients into a short crust pastry and then place it in the fridge for 1hour.
2nd step: when the time run down, roll out a 1cm thick dough and cut it into small pieces.
3rd step: create crescent-shaped pastries and place them on an ungreased baking tray and put it into an oven in order to bake the biscuits at 200℃ temperature till the kipferls get a light brown color.
