What did Churchill eat for his WW2 Birthday Dinner? Food History
In this video, we’re cooking up some more historical food in honour of Winston Churchill's birthday during World War 2.
Join me as I explore another WW2 food tale by cooking and tasting the birthday dinner that Churchill enjoyed with Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin.
In late 1943, the three world leaders met at the Iranian capital for The Tehran Conference, where they discussed their plans for defeating Germany, Japan, and plans for after the war. The conference coincided with Churchill’s 69th birthday, and so they shared an interesting birthday meal that seemed to combine British flavours with Middle Eastern touches
So, I’m creating some dishes from Churchill’s birthday banquet, learning more about what food the three leaders ate, and to find out how that one dinner helped change the course of WW2.

Recipe taken from The Course of History bu Struan Stevenon and Tony Singh MBE
3 litres chicken stock
50ml olive oil
100g red onion, finely diced
90g uncooked pearl barley
1⁄2 level tsp turmeric
Juice of 2 limes
6 ripe or overripe tomatoes blended to a purée in food processor
Salt
Black pepper
150g pumpkin, peeled and diced
A good handful chopped fresh parsley
6 lime wedges
Bring stock to a gentle simmer in a pot. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat and sauté the onion until translucent. Add the pearl barley to the pot and stir for one minute. Stir in the hot chicken stock, turmeric, lime juice, tomato, salt and pepper. Bring the mixture to the boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer for one hour. Mix in the pumpkin and continue simmering for 30 minutes or until the soup has thickened and the pumpkin and barley are tender. If the soup is too thick, add hot water or more stock if you have to, one tablespoon at a time. Stir in the fresh parsley. Serve with fresh lime wedges.
