"This recipe in some old cookbooks is called Date Sandwich Cake. Other variations are Raisin Squares or Fig Squares. .. Date Squares (Matrimonial Cake, if you happen to come from the West) are a real nostalgia treat. The fillings in the 30s recipes was extremely sweet. Today's versions reduce the sugar in the filling, since the dates are sweet enough, and are often microwaved. Raisin Puff, an old favorite in P.E.I. is somewhat similar, with raisin filling sandwiched between layers of soft cookie dough instead of an oatmeal mixture." Filling: In saucepan, cook dates, sugar, lemon juice and water over medium heat, stirring often, until the dates are soft, about 15 minutes. Let cool. In a bowl, combine flour, rolled oats, sugar, baking soda and salt; blend in butter until mixture is crumbly. Pat half onto bottom of 9 inch square pan. Spread filling evenly over the top. Sprinkle with the remaining flour mixture, patting lightly. Bake in a 350F oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until nicely browned. Let cool; cut into squares.
MAKES: 36 SQUARES VARIATION: Mincemeat Squares : Use 2 cups mincemeat instead of date filling. SOURCE: _A Century of Canadian Home Cooking: 1900 Through the 90s" by Carol Ferguson and Margaret Fraser

Date Squares Recipe Demonstration - Joyofbaking.com
Recipe here: Stephanie Jaworski of Joyofbaking.com demonstrates how to make Date Squares. Date Squares are also called Date Slices or even Matrimonial Bars. They consist of two buttery layers of an oatmeal shortbread crust that are sandwiched together with pureed dried dates scented with vanilla. I just love their wonderfully sweet yet earthy flavor. Absolutely perfect with a hot cup of tea.

Matrimonial square recipe!
I thought I would add a tea twist to a family favourite. Some of my best memories during Christmas were of my mom in the kitchen baking sweet treats. I miss her terribly and one way I reconnect is by continuing on with her traditions. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.
Edit: I told you to bake at 350 degrees, but I see the card says 325. My mom is definitely laughing and shaking her head.
How to Make Matrimonial Cake (Date Squares)
This dessert is a true Canadian treat. It is known at matrimonial cake in Western Canada and Date squares or Date Crumble in Eastern Canada.
Some feel it is called matrimonial cake because of the two separate layers brought together by dates which symbolizes two people courting and solidifying the relationship in marriage. Others feel that the smooth and rough textures of the date squares represent the easy and difficult times of a marriage. There are lots of other theories about the name, but one thing is for sure - it's delicious.
Outer Layer
1 1/2 Cups Flour
1/2 Teaspoon Baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder

1 cup butter melted
1 1/2 cups oatmeal
1 cup brown sugar

1 pound dates
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups hot water
