Croque Monsieur - Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwich
Bonjour, what a great sandwich to have for lunch. I show you how to make a béchamel and flavor it with gruyere to top off this Croque Monsieur sandwich.
ingredients:
Sauce:
1 Tablespoon all purpose flour
1 Tablespoon butter
1 cup milk
dash nutmeg, pepper and salt (1/4 teaspoon each)
1/2 cup grated gruyere
Melt your butter and flour together, and cook for one and one half minutes.
Add your warm cup of milk.
Add your salt, white pepper and nutmeg
Continue to cook and allow to bubble for two minutes.
Add your cheese and turn off the heat, allow to cool down a little
You also need:
loaf of bread, baguette or french bread preferred
additional gruyere (total about 1/2 pound for this recipe)
3/4 pound shaved ham
dijon mustard
herbs de provence
Slice your bread and toast it to your liking.
Very lightly smear a little dijon on each slice of bread
Add your thin sliced ham
Add a bit of grated cheese
Top with the other slice of bread
Add 1/4 of the cheese sauce
Top with more of the cheese
Bake 400F for 15 minutes
Serve with pickles and tossed green salad
Makes 4 sandwiches
The bread that you choose is important, so that you get the crusty crunch out of the oven.
The typical American Sandwich Bread is not recommended, but you can do what you want.
The Swiss Gruyere is very Very good on this, I hope you can use it when making this.
Thank you for watching!

Croque Monsieur Recipe | French Grilled Cheese Sandwich | Valentine's Day Recipe
This is the Croque Monsieur y'all! One thing we’ve fallen head over heels in love with? Sandwiches. But not just any sandwich, ones that are grilled, stuffed with tasty, salty meat, melted, gooey cheese and topped with a creamy luxurious bechamel sauce… Gets your heart all a flutter, doesn’t it? Paris, often called the City of Love, brought a legendary sandwich (actually a family of sandwiches) into the world in the 60’s: The Croque Monsieur, a ham and gruyere-stuffed sandwich, dipped in egg, and fried to crispy perfection and then drenched with the cheesy bechamel. We’d actually do anything for love, so we turn it up like only the Spatchcock Funk squad can - we add some more cheese and throw it down on a croissant to up the buttery flavor. Now, this Monsieur doesn’t like to be alone, so we also make a Croque Madam to keep him company, the same sandwich but topped with a fried egg. We smash ‘em too, because we love to smash. They were so in love they brought into the world the Croque Mademoiselle, which is the same sandwich but vegetarian, so we added in some roasted red peppers and sauteed spinach to make sure everyone feels the love today.

CROQUE MONSIEUR
A very popular bistro snack in France and for good reason
The French word croque meaning to crunch and Monsieur meaning Mister has been a common bar and cafe style meal that originated back in 1910. Most of the cafes today in Paris still have them on the menu and are commonly know just as a Croque. It's an addictive sandwich and rightly so due to the buttery crispy crunch bread, hot ham and the golden melted cheese. Some make it without the Bechamel, but for a few extra minutes its well worth the effort.
