How To make Haymaker's Switchel
1 c Brown sugar
1/2 ts Ginger
1/2 c Molasses
3/4 c Vinegar
2 qt Water
In haying season, farmers used to take their "nooning" (midday dinner) with them, including a jug of Switchel to wash the meal down. Although Switchel was usually straight, farmers have been known to spike it with hard cider, or even brandy which Down easters usd to say, "got the hay in the barn in half the time." Mix together, add ice and chill.

Recipe for Making Switchel (Haymaker's Punch)
Over the past few months I have been making Switchel or Haymaker's Punch. It's very refreshing, healthy and delicious. It was called Haymaker's Punch due to the old timers drinking it as a energy/electrolyte replacement drink for work during the long hot labor of cutting hay or grain in the field by hand. This is basically old time Gatorade or energy drinks long before those syrupy unhealthy replacement energy drinks came out. The recipe is very simple and easy to make, and you will enjoy how refreshing it is!
Ginger Switchel (Haymaker's Punch) recipe:
-1 gallon water or 100% juice
-1 1/2 cup of Sweetener ( 100% Raw natural real Honey, Molasses, or Maple Syrup)
- 1/3 cup of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother in it
- 1 TBSP Ground ginger, or a 1/4 cup of fresh grated ginger
Mix ingredients together and place in refrigerator overnight. If you desire a concentrate to add to seltzer water later use only half of the water or 100% juice in recipe.
Enjoy,

Switchel or Haymaker's Punch served in America since the Colonial period consisting of ginger, apple cider vinegar and a sweetener.
The proportions can vary according to your taste. For my three-cup Mason jar, I used:
6 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
4 tablespoons of sweetener (agave in mine - you can use honey, maple syrup or molasses)
3/4 teaspoons of ginger.

After hours of work hard in the sun a body needs more than just water to rehydrate. Before high-fructose corn syrup, artificial dyes and flavors and aluminum cans were ever invented energy drinks were popular. You just had to make them at home!
They were inexpensive, delicious and REALLY good at replenishing the sodium/potassium balance in cells so that they can properly re-hydrate. This amazing drink was called by many different names, often switchel or haymaker’s punch.
In this video Carolyn shows you how to make a very simple version of this original sports drink, switchel.
You’ll feel so much better about what your family is drinking after that summer soccer game or after you’ve put in a day of hard work together in the garden. And best yet switchel has been known to help with digestion, skin problems, weight issues and lack of energy... all from an inexpensive and delicious drink!
