Apple Cobbler with Cake Mix and Pie Filling ???????????????????????? | Easy Thanksgiving Dessert ????
My apple cobbler with cake mix and pie filling recipe is easy and absolutely delicious! This dump cake style cobbler can be made with only three ingredients, but adding a few extra things elevates this from good to great. The filling is full of flavor, and the cake mix topping is crispy, crunchy, and buttery. If you are looking for a quick and simple apple cobbler recipe that is perfect for beginner cooks, especially as a last minute Thanksgiving dinner dessert, look no further.
Like I said, this dump cake apple cobbler with cake mix recipe really only needs three ingredients: canned pie filling, cake mix, and butter. What makes this recipe so easy is that there is no prep work and no mixing: all you have to do is pour or dump the ingredients into a casserole dish one at a time, building layers of flavor along the way.
The first layer is the pie filling. I poured the cans of apple pie filling into the casserole dish, then spread out the filling and cut up any apple slices that were larger than the others. I then tasted the filling: it was good, but I thought I could take it to the next level. By adding a bit of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and lemon juice, along with a bit of brown sugar, I doctored up the storebought apple pie filling so that it tasted homemade.
After mixing in the spices and brown sugar, I moved on to the cake mix topping. Since there was no pie crust to roll out, I simply opened the box of white cake mix and dumped it over the cobbler. I distributed the cake mix as evenly as I could, taking care not to pack it down into the apples.
Once the cake mix was evenly spread across the top of the apple filling, it was time for the butter. I took two sticks of butter and cut them into very small slices, about 3 or 4 slices per tablespoon of butter. I then covered the cake mix with the thin slices of butter so that they could seep into the cake mix as the cobbler baked in the oven. Although it may be tempting to slice the butter a bit thicker and put fewer pieces on top of the cobbler, the butter is likely to melt more down than out, leaving some areas of the crust without butter.
When I pulled the apple cobbler out of the oven, I could see that the cake mix topping had turned beautifully golden brown. When I took the first bite, I realized that the wonderful combination of sweet apples, flavorful spices, and buttery cake mix worked together in perfect harmony.
In all honesty, this cobbler was a bit on the sweet side. The apple pie filling has sugar, as did the cake mix. I then added 1/4 cup of extra brown sugar, so there was definitely no lack of sugar in this recipe. Although this recipe was sweeter than the fruit pies and cobblers I normally make, the spices and butter helped to cut through the sweetness.
This apple cobbler with cake mix and pie filling recipe was definitely delicious, but the main advantage of this recipe is that it is so easy to make. Storebought apple pie filling means you don't have to wash, peel, or cut apples, and using a box of cake mix means that there is no rolling out pie crust. That makes this apple cobbler the perfect last-minute dessert for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any day. It's delicious on its own, with whipped cream, or even ice cream.
So, if you are looking for an apple cobbler recipe that is easy and can feed a crowd, be sure to give this one a try. ????????????????????????
