-Eden Organic Navy Beans No Salt Added (15mg per 1/2 cup)
-Heinz Tomato Ketchup No Salt (5mg per 1 tablespoon)
*The rest of the ingredients we used are little to no sodium
Recipe
Serves: about 8 cups
Ingredients:
4 (15oz) cans low salt navy beans
1 cup bourbon *don't worry the alcohol will get cooked out
1 cup maple syrup
1 cup barbecue sauce
1 cup light brown sugar, packed (use less for less sweetness)
1 cup water
¼ cup low salt ketchup
¼ cup mustard (if using Dijon, use less)
¼ cup light molasses
¼ cup olive oil
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons low salt soy sauce
Directions:
1. Rinse and drain canned beans, set aside.
2. In a crock pot, add all the ingredients except the beans and whisk together until there's a nice sheen. Then fold in the beans into the mixture being careful not to mash them.
3. Set crock pot on high for 4-6 hours covered undisturbed.
4. Open and mix at 4 hours. If it is soupy, leave uncovered for an additional hour.
5. After about 5-6 hours total, the bean mixture should be thick and very aromatic.
6. Serve warm as is or as a side dish.
Eat and enjoy!
Bourbon Baked Beans
Bourbon baked beans using brown sugar, molasses, Kentucky bourbon, ketchup, a bit of vinegar, spices, hickory liquid smoke, liquid Maggi seasoning, & Spam. I simmered the beans on the stove top until tender, then baked them with the other ingredients for another two hours at 350. Turned out rich, dark and full of flavor! We served it with barbequed pork tenderloin and a baked potato. We'll definitely try this recipe again!
