Mix into crumbs & make- 4 c Flour 2 ts Baking powder 1 1/4 c Butter or margarine 1 pn Salt 1 1/2 c Sugar Put in well and mix together 1 ts Soda 1/2 ts Vanilla extract 1/2 ts Almond extract 1/2 ts Lemon extract 2 lg Eggs 1/2 c Buttermilk or milk Mix dry ingredients with butter until crumbly. Make a well in the center and add remaining ingredients. Chill in refrigerator for at least 3 hours or overnight. Roll out to 1/4" thick and cut with favorite cookie cutter. Bake at 325 degreees for 10 - 12 minutes on a greased cookie sheet. If a colored cookie is desired, add food color to wet ingredients. Cool and frost as desired. -----

Baking with Betty: Sugar Cookies from the Betty Crocker Cooky Cookbook. How good are these cookies?
So, I've been baking out of this vintage cookbook for over 30 years. It's still in print, which is a testament to how good it is. I know people can just grab free recipes off the internet, but I still love to sit down on a Sunday Morning with a cup of coffee and a cozy blanket, look through my cookbooks, and plan out what I want to make for the day. I just love having a paper cookbook for certain things.
Also, fun note, I put a little star next to recipes that I loved. If I make something that didn't turn out or we didn't like (which has never happened with this book) I also make a note of that. Or, if I make some little change - like I use almond extract instead of vanilla or I substituted brown sugar for white.
I have never baked a recipe from this book that didn't taste great and turn out perfectly. The only thing with this baking challenge is that I HATE RAISINS!!! So, any recipes with raisins - I will change to nuts or cranberries or dried cherries. I'm just not into baked raisins.
This particular recipe makes great sugar cookies for decorating. I like to roll them out a little thick so they hold up well to decorating. I use this recipe for fondant covered cookies, but they are also great just frosted. One little change I make is that I prefer Vanilla Bean Paste to extract. It just gives a much better flavor overall and makes a prettier cookie.
I'll be posting a new video from this series weekly. I'll probably hop around in the book to bake things that match the season and my moods.
I also put a link to the measuring cups and spoons I'm using. I just got this set and I love it. I was using a less expensive set and the writing keeps rubbing off. I love that these have raised text. I know the difference, but my teen who does a lot of baking gets the cups and spoons mixed up sometimes when the text fades off and she had messed up a few recipes using the wrong cups. These Kitchen Aid cups and spoons have made a big difference.
